Overview & Guidelines
The SHAPE Arkansas K-12 Physical Education Teacher of the Year Awards recognize outstanding physical educators across all grade levels who demonstrate excellence in teaching, curriculum development, student engagement, and advocacy for lifelong physical activity and wellness. These awards honor educators who go beyond traditional instruction, implementing innovative strategies, fostering student growth, and promoting physical literacy in their schools and communities.
Award Categories

K-12 Physical Education Teacher of the Year

Recognizes an exceptional physical educator who teaches across multiple grade levels (elementary, middle, and/or high school).

Elementary Physical Education Teacher of the Year
-
Honors a K-5 PE teacher who excels in foundational movement skills, play-based learning, and fostering a love for physical activity in young students.

Middle School Physical Education Teacher of the Year
-
Celebrates a 6-8 PE teacher who integrates fitness education, skill development, and teamwork-based activities into their curriculum.

High School Physical Education Teacher of the Year
-
Recognizes a 9-12 PE teacher who demonstrates excellence in physical fitness instruction, student motivation, and lifelong activity promotion at the secondary level.

Eligibility Requirements
-
Nominees must be certified physical education teachers in an Arkansas school.

Candidates should have a minimum of three years of teaching experience in physical education.

Nominees should actively advocate for quality physical education and engage in professional development to enhance their teaching.

Must demonstrate impactful teaching strategies that promote student learning, skill development, and lifelong wellness habits.
Selection Process

Nomination Period

Nominations can be submitted by students, colleagues, administrators, parents, or community members.

Nominations must include a completed form and supporting materials (e.g., recommendation letters, lesson plans, student testimonials).

A selection committee composed of SHAPE Arkansas board members and PE professionals will review applications.

Finalist Selection & Interviews

The top 3-5 nominees in each category will advance as finalists.

Finalists may be invited to participate in an interview or classroom observation (in-person or virtual).

Winner Selection & Announcement

The selection committee will review all materials holistically to determine the winner.

Winners will be announced at the SHAPE Arkansas Annual Conference and receive official recognition.

Award Recognition & Benefits

Official Recognition: Winners will receive an award plaque/trophy and be honored at the SHAPE Arkansas Conference.

Statewide Recognition: Featured on the SHAPE Arkansas website, social media, and educational publications.
