Overview & Guidelines
The SHAPE Arkansas Health Education Teacher of the Year Award recognizes an outstanding health educator who demonstrates excellence in teaching, curriculum development, and student engagement in health education. This award honors teachers who go beyond traditional instruction to promote lifelong health, wellness, and decision-making skills among students.
Purpose of the Award
This award celebrates a K-12 health education teacher who:

Implements innovative and engaging health education strategies in the classroom.

Helps students develop critical thinking and decision-making skills related to health and wellness.

Advocates for comprehensive health education programs that address physical, mental, emotional, and social well-being.

Creates a safe and inclusive learning environment that encourages student participation and growth.
Eligibility Requirements

Must be a certified K-12 health education teacher in an Arkansas school.

Must have a minimum of three years of teaching experience in health education.

Demonstrates commitment to student wellness through engaging and effective teaching methods.

Actively participates in professional development and promotes health education beyond the classroom.

Incorporates current, research-based health practices into their teaching.
Selection Process

Nomination Period

Nominations can be submitted by colleagues, students, administrators, parents, or community members.

Nominations must include a completed form and supporting materials (e.g., recommendation letters, lesson plans, student testimonials).

A selection committee composed of SHAPE Arkansas board members and health education professionals will review applications.

The top 3-5 nominees will advance as finalists.

Finalists may be invited to participate in an interview or classroom observation (in-person or virtual).

The selection committee will review all materials holistically to determine the winner.

Winners will be announced at the SHAPE Arkansas Annual Conference and receive official recognition.

Award Recognition & Benefits

Official Recognition: Winners will receive an award plaque/trophy and be honored at the SHAPE Arkansas Conference.
