COACH OF THE YEAR

Overview & Guidelines

The SHAPE Arkansas Coach of the Year Award recognizes an outstanding K-12 coach who demonstrates excellence in coaching, leadership, student development, and advocacy for physical activity and wellness. This award honors a coach who goes beyond winning and competition by emphasizing character development, sportsmanship, and the overall well-being of student-athletes.

Purpose of the Award

This award celebrates a K-12 coach who:

  • Fosters an inclusive and positive team culture that prioritizes personal growth and skill development.

  • Teaches sportsmanship, discipline, and life skills alongside athletic performance.

  • Implements innovative coaching techniques that promote physical literacy, injury prevention, and lifelong fitness.

  • Advocates for student wellness, mental health, and academic success.

  • Serves as a mentor and role model for students, demonstrating integrity and leadership.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Must be a current K-12 coach in an Arkansas school (any sport).

  • Must have a minimum of three years of coaching experience at the school level.

  • Demonstrates a commitment to student-athletes’ overall well-being, including physical, mental, and emotional health.

  • Incorporates best practices, research-based coaching methods, and sports science into training and development.

  • Actively participates in professional development and mentorship opportunities within the coaching community.

Selection Process

  1. Nomination Period

    • Nominations can be submitted by students, colleagues, administrators, parents, or community members.

    • Nominations must include a completed form and supporting materials (e.g., recommendation letters, student testimonials, team success stories).

  2. Review & Evaluation

    • A selection committee composed of SHAPE Arkansas board members, coaching professionals, and athletic leaders will review applications.

    • Nominees will be evaluated based on:

      • Impact on Student-Athletes' Development & Character Growth

      • Commitment to Sportsmanship, Leadership, & Positive Coaching Practices

      • Advocacy for Athlete Wellness, Safety, & Mental Health

      • Dedication to Professional Growth & Community Engagement

  3. Finalist Selection & Interviews

    • The top 3-5 nominees will advance as finalists.

    • Finalists may be invited to participate in an interview or practice observation (in-person or virtual).

  4. Winner Selection & Announcement

    • The selection committee will review all materials holistically to determine the winner.

    • Winners will be announced at the SHAPE Arkansas Annual Conference and receive official recognition.

Award Recognition & Benefits

  • Official Recognition: Winners will receive an award plaque/trophy and be honored at the SHAPE Arkansas Conference.

  • Statewide Recognition: Featured on the SHAPE Arkansas website, social media, and educational publications.

  • Professional Development Opportunities: Invited to present at SHAPE Arkansas events and contribute to coaching and wellness initiatives.

  • Eligibility for Regional or National Recognition (where applicable).

  • Submit nominations via the official SHAPE Arkansas website or email.

  • Provide detailed responses in the nomination form.

  • Attach supporting materials such as practice plans, student testimonials, and team development initiatives.
