Overview

SHAPE Arkansas is launching the Arkansas Spring Break Mileage Challenge—a statewide initiative designed to keep Arkansas moving during Spring Break!

This challenge encourages high school runners, PE classes, and entire communities to stay active by running, walking, or hiking, tracking their miles using Garmin wearables and the Strava app. Participants will compete for top leaderboard spots, exciting prizes, and scholarships while promoting a culture of fitness across the state!

Event Details

Who Can Participate?

Everyone is welcome! Special focus on:

  • High school cross-country & track teams

  • PE programs across Arkansas

  • Running clubs & track programs

  • Individual students, teachers, and community members

  • Families (with categories for parents & kids!)

When?

📅 March 20 – March 30, 2025 (Spring Break)

 

How It Works:

  1. Register here to join the challenge and have your miles tracked through Strava.

  2. Allow Chad Sanders, SHAPE Arkansas Executive Director, to follow you on Strava.

  3. Track your miles using a Garmin watch or the Strava app on your phone. (A watch is best, but most runners carry both!)

  4. Watch the leaderboards! Daily and total mileage will be displayed statewide.

  5. Compete for prizes! Schools, individuals, and families can win based on total miles, participation, and creative social media engagement.

🏆 High School Team Challenge – Most total miles run
🏆 PE Class Challenge – Most active participants & total miles
🏆 Individual Challenge – Top mileage runners & walkers
📸 "Spring Break Adventure" Challenge – Share scenic/motivational photos with #ArkansasMoves

  • Licensed Teacher – Fastest Mile

  • Child Most Miles (by age division)

  • Individual – Fastest 1 Mile, 2 Mile, 5 Mile, 10 Mile

  • Individual – Segment Challenges (Pick a segment & race!)

  • Pinnacle Mountain Eastside Challenge

  • Pinnacle Mountain Westside Challenge

Prizes & Incentives

🏅 Prizes will be based on fundraising efforts! Up to 50% of funds raised will go toward awards & scholarships for high school competitors, while the rest will support SHAPE Arkansas health & fitness programs statewide.

🎓 Scholarship Prizes will be awarded to 10th-12th grade competitors who achieve top placements, with emphasis on graduating seniors.

Awards Include:

🥇 Top High School Team & PE Class – Statewide recognition & award (TBA)
🥇 Top 3 Individual Runners (Male & Female) – Scholarships (categories can be combined)
🏆 Social Media Challenge Winner – Statewide recognition & award (TBA)

How Schools & Teachers Can Get Involved

🏫 PE Teachers & Coaches – Encourage students to sign up and track mileage during break.
🏃‍♂️ Host Local Kickoff Events – Organize a "Spring Break Kickoff Run" before break starts.
🎯 Offer Incentives – Reward participation with extra credit, homework passes, or bonus points!

A Challenge Led by Experience

The SHAPE Arkansas Executive Director, Chad Sanders, is a highly experienced physical educator and track coach in Arkansas. With over 20 years of experience, he has taught physical education at all levels, hosted State Track Meets, and worked at the university level to develop future physical educators and coaches. His deep understanding of competition, program development, and athlete motivation makes him uniquely qualified to lead this initiative.

 

Adding a personal touch to the challenge, Chad is also the father of standout senior runner Owen Sanders of Little Rock Christian Academy, making this event even more meaningful to him.
